First, you might have a file that you edit on the notebook and also edit on the desktop without having performed a file sync. Some syncing software is 'smart' about this issue and deal with it. Second, you probably don't want to use file syncing for things like email, iCal, your address book, etc. First, there's the potential problem mentioned above. Second, these files can get pretty large - especially email, and add lots of needless time to the sync process. Using Google Drive or Dropbox works great for this, setting up syncing on both machines, however one of the biggest problems when trying to sync my development files was the complete lack of. Here's my problem: because neither Mac has enough storage to store all my data, I tend to selectively keep some of the data on Dropbox but not sync'd, and a backup of that data on the second external hard drive.
